13:58 May 25 2012 Amuru, Uganda

Description
The education sector in Amuru district is faced with numerous challenges and this to some extent explains the poor performance of pupils during the national examinations, the PLE. Some of these challenges according to Amuru District Education Officer (DEO) include limited class rooms in all the schools, limited awareness on the importance of education especially girl child education, inadequate teachers in the district; she cited that some school have less than seven teachers. Other problems include few schools and inadequate scholastic materials in most schools in the district among others. While addressing Amuru community at Otwee Public Primary school during “Back to School Campaign” meeting, DEO Amuru informed the community that Amuru district is working hard to improve the district performance at the national level, he added that currently the district is constructing more schools and class rooms under PRDP and school facilitation grant, the district is sensitizing the community on the benefit of education through “Back to school campaign” and more teachers recruited last year (107 teachers recruited in 2011).
