ATCnet seeking HIV-AIDS Stories
Do you think you could help ATCnet with one of our projects - HIV-AIDS Stories. We are looking to learn about individuals, old and young, looking after orphans, doctors and nurses at little clinics, schoolchildren teaching about awareness, women taking control of the behavior change needs, companies being helpful, community initiatives, etc. ATCnet will publish a collection of these stories around February 19, 2002 in conjunction with a series of EVENTS that are being organized to highlight this humanitarian crisis in Africa ..... and we plan to start a fund raising campaign so that the people doing these amazing things can be helped much more than they are at the moment. March 2002
Second Announcement: Women and Environment Conference in preparation of RIO+10
Uganda Women Tree Planting Movement (UWTPM) would like to announce the International Consultative meeting in preparation for RIO+10. The consultative meeting will take place in the first week of March 2002 in Kampala, Uganda. The target groups are African project women leaders who are implementing RIO Conventions, e.g., desertification, biodiversity, climate change and forum on the forests. We intend to examine the UN main conferences that took place after RIO, e.g., Vienna, Copenhagen, Cairo, Beijing, Istanbul and Rome for the Food Summit. In all these meetings, women's involvement at different levels in decision-making was highlighted.
The main objective of this meeting is to take stock from RIO 1992 todate and see how much women have benefited from these UN Conferences and if they haven't, we want to know why they have not benefited. This will help us to come up with a way forward for the 21st Century's women's movement.
International delegates are welcome as observers. For more information about this meeting, please contact:

Call for Nominations: Prize for Women's Creativity in Rural Life
Awarded since 1995 by the Women's World Summit Foundation (WWSF) - an international NGO for the empowerment of women and children - the Prize ($500 each) annually honours women and women's groups exhibiting exceptional creativity, courage and commitment in improving the quality of life in rural communities. The Prize aims to draw international attention to the laureates' contributions to sustainable development, household food security and peace, thus generating more recognition and support for their projects. While rural women are vital in providing examples of sound practice in rural communities, they still do not have to full access tools needed for development, such as education, credit, land rights and participation in decision-making. By highlighting creative development models, innovations and experiences enhancing the quality of life in rural areas, WWSF hopes to participate in addressing the eradication of extreme poverty and help arrest the drift to urban areas.
Deadline for nominations is March 2002. For additional information, including nomination forms, contact:

Second Africa Telehealth Conference, Kampala, Uganda. March 27 - 30, 2002.
Acting within the framework of the African Information Society Initiative, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Africa Telehealth Project, have been promoting the application of information and communication in various sectors including health. Information and communication technologies have proven crucial for improved health administration and connectivity within the health sector; for supporting decision for curative health; and for improved distribution and reduced cost of medical supplies. However, the health sector in Africa still lags very much behind other sectors in application of these new technologies. Basic applications such as electronic medical records, hospital information systems, local networks for sharing and distributing information among health workers, provision of remote diagnostics via Telemedicine, and community health information systems for local, regional and national services have not been developed in Africa.
The 2002 Africa Telehealth Conference aims at finding means and ways of helping Africa develop and implement self-sustaining telehealth services and increase opportunities for North American and European health service professionals and technology companies participate in this key sector.

Know How Conference on the World of Women's Information
The Know How conference 2002 will be held within Women World's 2002 program from 23-27 July, 2002 in Kampala, Uganda. This will be the 5th conference of specialists in the collection and dissemination of information relevant to women. The conference is being organized by Isis-Women's International Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE) assisted by the International Information Center and Archives for the Women's Movement (IIAV) in Amsterdam.
The two events complement each other in that the Women's Worlds brings together creators of knowledge (researchers) while the Know How conference brings together specialists in getting information to where it is needed--to the grassroots, researchers, policy makers and the media. By bringing the information specialists to the Women's Worlds conference and researchers to the Know How workshops, we hope to radically affect the relationships between research, activism and information flows.
All conference participants and information specialists will be welcome to the Know How Workshops and the thematic workshops of the Women's Worlds congress.
Update (June 2002): Following are pre-conference documents (WORD format) for the Kampala Know How Conference. As indicated in the conference program, a number of parallel sessions and workshops are being organised. The number of participants for each room is limited. If you have a clear preference to one of these workshops contact the conference organizers before July 15, 2002. The principal is first come, first served. The available documents are:
  1. Pre-conference document - Know How Conference: Background information on the Kampala Know How Conference; Mission of the Know How Conference; Linkage Women's World and Know How Conference; Program and Overview of the sessions; Conference Format; List of Organizers.
  2. Report of the IIAV to the Kampala Know How Conference: Background; Taking the Declaration of the Know How Conference to the UN; Knowledge Sharing Program: Projects and Partners; Future Plans; Ideas on the future of Know How; Declaration of the Amsterdam Know How Conference; Press Release, Joke Smit Prize.

October 2002
PANOS Media Fellowships on ICTs-enabled Communication Strategies for Social Change
Panos seeks to offer a number of fellowship grants to journalists or development experts to research and write articles in national and international media on ICTs and their development impact. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are recognised as a powerful tool to facilitate social development. Panos sees the need to have an independent account by journalists and development experts who can reflect the range of perspectives among user communities, the rural poor, government officers, development workers, policy makers, and other stakeholders, as to what 'ICTs for development' means in their societies. These views need to frame the debate around ICTs-enabled development discourses. Panos plans to commission journalists and development experts from the South to visit telecentres in their regions. 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence: Creating a Culture that Says No to Violence Against Women, November 25 - December 10, 2002
For the past eleven years, over 1, 000 individuals and organizations from over 100 countries have sponsored activities in their communities during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, November 25 - December 10, to raise awareness about all forms of violence against women. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence has become an annual event in many towns, states and regions. Activists have used this 16-day period to create a solidarity movement that raises awareness around gender-based violence as a human rights abuse. The movement works to ensure better protection for survivors of violence and calls for the elimination of all forms of violence against women.
During this year's campaign, advocates are encouraged to discuss and strategize around the link between culture and all forms of violence against women: violence that women experience in their homes, in their communities, by the state, by non-state actors, during times of war and during times of peace.
