Project News & Upcoming Events: 2002March 2002 Second Announcement: Women and Environment Conference in preparation of RIO+10 Uganda Women Tree Planting Movement (UWTPM) would like to announce the International Consultative meeting in preparation for RIO+10. The consultative meeting will take place in the first week of March 2002 in Kampala, Uganda. The target groups are African project women leaders who are implementing RIO Conventions, e.g., desertification, biodiversity, climate change and forum on the forests. We intend to examine the UN main conferences that took place after RIO, e.g., Vienna, Copenhagen, Cairo, Beijing, Istanbul and Rome for the Food Summit. In all these meetings, women's involvement at different levels in decision-making was highlighted. The main objective of this meeting is to take stock from RIO 1992 todate and see how much women have benefited from these UN Conferences and if they haven't, we want to know why they have not benefited. This will help us to come up with a way forward for the 21st Century's women's movement. International delegates are welcome as observers. For more information about this meeting, please contact: Contact person: Mrs. Ruth Mubiru Executive Director, UWTPM Email: zenithcafe@yahoo.com (Subject: ATTN Mrs. Ruth Mubiru) Web: UWTPM Profile Call for Nominations: Prize for Women's Creativity in Rural Life Awarded since 1995 by the Women's World Summit Foundation (WWSF) - an international NGO for the empowerment of women and children - the Prize ($500 each) annually honours women and women's groups exhibiting exceptional creativity, courage and commitment in improving the quality of life in rural communities. The Prize aims to draw international attention to the laureates' contributions to sustainable development, household food security and peace, thus generating more recognition and support for their projects. While rural women are vital in providing examples of sound practice in rural communities, they still do not have to full access tools needed for development, such as education, credit, land rights and participation in decision-making. By highlighting creative development models, innovations and experiences enhancing the quality of life in rural areas, WWSF hopes to participate in addressing the eradication of extreme poverty and help arrest the drift to urban areas. Deadline for nominations is March 2002. May 13 - June 07, 2002 Development organizations around the world recognize the power of information to raise awareness and mobilize action for social change. They also recognize the need to develop their own capacity to access, organize and use information effectively. They need methods that are both locally appropriate and globally connected. The Certificate in Managing NGO Resource Centres will provide participants with the opportunity to gain or improve skills in managing information, as well as to analyse the dynamics of indigenous knowledge, appropriate media, information sharing and networking. During the program participants will develop an action plan for their resource centre's contribution to the community-based development, information and education strategies of their organization. This unique four-week program is intended for those actively working in, or planning to establish, a resource centre. The workshop format will emphasize the active exchange of ideas among participants within a collaborative learning environment. Participants will also have access to excellent information technology facilities. Registration will be limited to 25 participants. Deadline for application is January 15, 2002. This will be the 5th conference of specialists in the collection and dissemination of information relevant to women. The conference is being organized by Isis-Women's International Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE) assisted by the International Information Center and Archives for the Women's Movement (IIAV) in Amsterdam. The two events complement each other in that the Women's Worlds brings together creators of knowledge (researchers) while the Know How conference brings together specialists in getting information to where it is needed--to the grassroots, researchers, policy makers and the media. By bringing the information specialists to the Women's Worlds conference and researchers to the Know How workshops, we hope to radically affect the relationships between research, activism and information flows. All conference participants and information specialists will be welcome to the Know How Workshops and the thematic workshops of the Women's Worlds congress.
