Violet Akurut is the new Coordinator for Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET). She brings to the Organisation a wealth of experience in management at the top level spanning over a period of 11 years, both at the local, national and international level obtained from various organisations she has worked for. This includes aspects of Gender, Social Work, HIV/AIDS, OVC, Reproductive Health, Education and Human Rights - which have exposed her to issues of human rights, gender, HIV/AIDS, among others, and fundraising and management. Violet has a passion for women and children and with a vision of gender equality and justice for all for sustainable development to thrive. She has worked with Katakwi Local Government as the District Gender Officer, carrying out programmes for women and children in the district, before she joined Soroti Catholic Diocese Education Department under Basic Education Rehabilitation/Support Programme as a Programme Officer. She was in the forefront in the rehabilitation of the education in Teso sub region by providing the infrastructure and building the capacity of stakeholders in education management. While working with the Diocese still, she designed, implemented and evaluated various children’s programs especially in relation to HIV/AIDS funded by USAID, and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD). These experiences have equipped her with the design, implementation, technical aspects of children’s programming and evaluation - which is particularly important given WOUGNET's new focus on both women and the youth. Violet has participated in a number of researches and assessments. Some of these include a baseline survey on education in Teso sub region, documentation of women experience in situation of armed conflict and civil strife in the Teso sub region, and Mbale local government Assessment 2007/2008. She have also participated extensively in a number of capacity building trainings which have equipped her with knowledge and skills in various areas of policy, socio-economic development, management, monitoring and evaluation, child welfare and development, politics, democracy, human rights and institutional development.
