Some of the Women organisations in Uganda Championing the 16 days of Activism PDF Print E-mail
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign started on 25November 2011. The theme of this year's campaign is "From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let's Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women”. This annual international campaign runs from 25 November, International Day against violence against Women, to 10December, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation. In Uganda, women activists are championing this great cause through a number of activities:

1. Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET)

Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) is a non-governmental organisation initiated in May 2000 by several women's organisations in Uganda to develop the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) among women as tools to share information and address issues collectively. With generous support from the Association for Progressive Communication (APC), WOUGNET  has organised a number of activities to take place during the 16 days of activism. These are:

• An SMS campaign [send SMS to 0779053756 if you would like to join]
• Blogging on stories of Violence Against Women on: www.wougnet.org
• Mapping stories of Violence and uploading them on a Ushahid platform - www.apc.org/ushahidi
• Hold an Advocacy event to high light Violence against Women Entrepreneurs that will take place on 29th November at Metropole Hotel, Windsor Crescent.

-          Open door to different stakeholders including government, bilateral agencies and civil society to direct their interventions to the critical needs of young girls in Kasese district

-          Provide space to engage and advocate for policy change to address women’s post conflict needs and concerns in the district towards effective implementation of the NAP on SCR 1325.
