Peaceful Women Demonstration - ‘Women's Vigil for Justice and Peace’ PDF Print E-mail
In response to the current situation in the country, the Women of Uganda are organizing a peaceful demonstration dubbed ‘WOMEN’S VIGIL FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE’. Dressed in white and each carrying an empty saucepan to symbolize soaring food prices and the challenges of meeting other basic needs including condemning human rights violations, women from different organizations, political parties and institutions will march within the city  and later converge at a yet to be identified venue where they will present a statement to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Margaret Sekajja.

Are you a woman who feels the same way about the current situation in our country? Please join us to demand for response from our government on the current situation and demand that all players desist from violence and find lasting solutions on Monday 9th May 2011.

We shall converge at 9.00am at Old Kira Road Play Ground, next to Kira Road Police Station. We have notified Police and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has cleared the women's gathering.

Please prepare your white attire, saucepan, and mingling stick to use in hitting the saucepan during the procession.

Please no party colours.  We are women and men for peace.  Tell your friend, your neighbor, the market woman, the woman seated in your office and our male colleagues you are most welcome.

This action is spearheaded by Women’s Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) including Action for Development (ACFODE), Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET), Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE), National Association of Women Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU), Centre for Women in Governance (CEWIGO), Institute For Social Development (IST), Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Akina Mama Wa Africa (AMWA), Wellspring, Isis Women's International Cross Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE), among others.

We shall be glad to have you join us.
