Activities in Uganda to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Below are some of the activities Organizations through out Uganda have under taken and will continue to under take in commemoration of the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence. We hope you can be part of these great initiatives.

Center for Domestic Violence Prevention
(CEDOVIP), Uganda launched their 16 days of Activism Campaign on 23rd November with a pressconference, a march and a vigil.
CEDOVIP furthermore plans to carry out a number
of activities during these 16 days. Some of them include: broadcasting spot messages using various electronic media, carrying out four meetings with religious leaders, carrying out public Purple Ribbon campaign, taking part in radio programs, publications will also be sent out in various print media, a Film show and discussions, awareness raising public events, dialogue
meetings with health workers and journalists, awareness raising sports events, community
dramas, and dialogue meetings with the police and health workers. Please go to

Oxfam, Uganda

Made an early start to the 16 days campaign on 10th November by holding a video discussion on Engaging faith based communities to prevent GBV and HIV/Aids. In Commemoration of World AIDS Day, Oxfam, Uganda has organised a number of activities which will take place on 3rd December at their Gulu Offices, Obama Grounds. Among these activities will be a volleyball tournament scheduled to start at 4.15 pm and voluntary counselling and testing between 2.00pm-6.00pm which will be open to the public.

African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACORD)

Has arranged Open day dialogue and police open day (massive dialogue with the security forces and general public) & launch of livelihoods support to survivor groups on 2nd December in Awach.

Children/Youth as Peace Builders in Uganda (CAP)
Has planned Parish- level community dialogues targeting men and women and local leaders in
Northern Uganda. These dialogues will take place in these areas on these dates:
On 26th November-Palaro, 2nd December-Lalogi, 6th December-Lakwana and 9th December Bungatira.

War Child Holland

will be carrying out the following activities between 26th November- 10th December 2010:
Community meeting on follow up on Solutions raised in the Community Solution magazines.26th
November -10th December in Amuru, Alero and Attiak sub counties. Community dialogue with children and adults on child protection/GBV issues at the border point on 30th November 2010 in Attiak Sub county, Bibia Parish. a Radio campaign with children in schools in Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya Pece, Koro, Ongako, Laroo, Bardege, Layibi in Gulu District. Purongo and
Anaka in Nwoya District. Attiak, Lamogi, Amuru and Pabbo Sub counties in Amuru District from 26thth December. November-10

The Northern Uganda Malaria AIDS Tuberculosis Programme(NUMAT)

Held 2 day Community Dialogues involving LCs, local security institutions, opinion leaders, religious leaders) in Bobi, Paicho ,Pece ,Alero and Lamogi in November.NUMAT will also be carrying out HIV Counseling and Testing from 25th November to 10th December Gulu, Amuru,Nwoya.

People§s Voice for Peace, Uganda in collaboration with Gulu Women's Task Force for the PRDP have arranged to show Public awareness dramas, songs, dances on 4th December in Bungatira.

UNFPA

In collaboration with Uganda People§s Defence Force police, private security and Uganda Human Rights Commission will: Send out Spot messages and also have 5 radio programs aired on Radio King Safe schools meetings in Amuru District, Pabbo Sub-County on Wednesday , December 1st Monitoring of GBV response with security actors will be carried out on Tuesday December 7th in Amuru District and Wednesday December 8th in Gulu District. A Human Rights/GBV Public Lecture is also to be held on Wednesday December 8th or Thursday December 9th at TBD the theme for this lecture will focus on Convention on Elimination of all forms of Violence Against Women (CEDAW)

Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET)

In partnership with the Association for Progressive Communications Women's Networking Programme (APC WNSP) will be launching the Take Back the Tech Campaign 2010. This campaign will call on all ICT users to take control of technology and use it to change gender power relations. Below are some of the activities they will have during the 16 Days of Activism:
An SMS campaign targeting participants from all regions of the world, a Newspaper Insert in the New Vision Publishing Company Ltd, 25th October 2010, Blogging on issues related to gender based violence as well as strategies and tactics for using ICTs to address violence against women
Tweeting (#TBTT2010 @wougnet) and using Facebook (
www.facebook.com/wougnet) as social platforms for sharing views on VAW,A half day public dialogue has been scheduled for
30th November 2010 at Grand Imperial Hotel starting at 2.00 pm And Painting a wall by women activists and other fans on 3rd December 2010 at 2.00 pm at Wandegeya, Kampala

Icon Women and Young People§s Leadership
Academy on 26th November started its 16 days of Activism activities with a visit to Munyonyo where facilitators met with a group of about 30 young people to hold discussions centered on the
National theme for this year, ¢Engaging Faith-based Communities to Prevent Violence against Women.
To facilitate these discussions the SASA Film was shown and later the participants were given full color posters calling for commitment from everyone to prevent GBV.¢Prevent Violence Against Women¢ purple ribbons were also distributed.On Thursday 2nd December 2010 a group of Icon fellows from Gulu University in Northern Uganda will take part in community campaigns against Gender Based Violence. Discussions centered around the engaging faith based communities in the fight against Gender Based Violence will be conducted by the Icon Fellows.

Through collaboration with WOUGNET, Icon and some of its fellows will participate in the "Take Back Tech Campaign"
