For those of you using Microsoft Windows and are either using pirated versions or paying high license fees, a move to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is what you need. However, the migration can be a daunting task, therefore to make the transition easier, I’d recommend that you start by using FOSS applications that have been developed to work in the MS-Windows environment so that you are familiar with the software when you finally make the transition. Comparable and in many cases better applications are available in FOSS to perform such tasks as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, web browsing, photo, video and music editing, instant messaging and email to mention a few.
