The International Women Tribune Center (IWTC) strengthens Women’s voices on UN resolutions 1325 &182 PDF Print E-mail

The International Women's Tribune Center (IWTC) is promoting and strengthening the women voices in post conflict areas of Northern Uganda through a series of radio drama episodes. The organisation has partnered with local FM stations in Uganda and women’s organisation in putting into action the United Nations Security Council resolutions1325 and 1820 about women’s contribution to peace building.

The United Nations Security Council resolutions calls for increasing the number of women at decision making level in national, regional institutions involved in managing conflicts. In Uganda and as in many African countries, women did not start the war and yet they are the most affected by it. Yet little space is given to them to lead the search for solutions.

The radio drama series has become a voice for women affected by war. An estimated 100,000 women and men in post conflict areas today are glued towards a series of weekly radio broadcasts featuring strong, outspoken women claiming their rights. The series encourages women to address sexual violence in conflict and post conflict regions while at the same time highlighting the role of women in peace building and decision-making processes.

Kubere Information Center (KIC) in partnership with a community radio (Radio Apac) spearheads the radio drama series in Apac district and making known to wider audience issues of Sexual and Gender Based Violence and how women can be empowered to take up actions in spear heading solutions on matters that affect their development. The radio drama series entitled the Open Cage is a continuation of Phase I series and shall be aired on a number of radio stations featuring episode 7-12

The International Women's Tribune Centre (IWTC) is an international non-governmental organization established in l976 following the United Nations International Women's Year World Conference in Mexico City. With a commitment to empowering people and building communities.

IWTC's work is grounded on the premise that access to information and the ability to communicate are basic to the process of women's empowerment, to women's ability to re-defining development paradigms, to women's participation in the public policy arena and to the building of democratic societies.

Women organisations implementing the project includes the Kubere Information Center (KIC) in Apac, Luwero Women Development Association, Teso Women Peace Activivists, Kitgum Women Peace Initiatives and radio stations including Radio Apac,Radio Rhino and Radio Simba.
