Female Youths are sensitised about becoming Actors in Bridging the Gender Digital Divide PDF Print E-mail
The second in a series of Gender and ICT youth camps was held in Western Uganda for a period of three days from 26th-28th June 2009 at Maanji Memorial School, Mbarara town. The first camp was held in Eastern Uganda (Mbale) in April 2009 while the next will be held in Northern Uganda (Lira).

The camp was organised by Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) in partnership with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and it attracted over 100 participants who were mainly school girls from schools in Isingiro and Mbarara districts.  The camp aimed at sensitising female youths on the benefits and opportunities offered by ICTs for women/girls and to empower them to improve their livelihoods and position in society. The objectives of the camp were to equip participants with ICT skills, raise awareness on gender and ICT issues and on the role of ICTs for development. It was also an opportunity to sensitise the youths about the services and role of UCC in promoting ICT usage among Ugandans.

The camp comprised of sessions on the role of ICTs in development, UCC and the girl child as an ICT actor, using ICT for education, gender as a concept, gender issues in ICT and practical sessions on computer, Internet and networking tools.

Through question and answer sessions, participants raised relevant issues on gender and ICTs in specific reference to their physical and cultural settings, which were all addressed. The girls were encouraged by Mr. Fred Otunnu, the manager communications and consumer affairs, UCC to participate in an essay competition where the best writers would be rewarded. The essay question was, “What is your role as a youth in the ICT development process in relation to innovation and creativity?”    The participants were equipped with basic knowledge on how to use a computer and even went ahead to open up their own email accounts.

In a nutshell, the camp achieved its target of creating awareness on ICT and gender issues. Students were availed with basic computer skills and left the camp empowered.
