March 2009: How To Protect Your Computer From Lightening. PDF Print E-mail

You may think your computer is safe because you have installed the latest computer virus protection, you’ve got a bullet-proof firewall to safeguard against hackers, and you never eat cookies over your keyboard.  But have you checked the weather forecast?

Thunderstorms are more than just a noisy nuisance.  They can send charges of electricity through a building strong enough to destroy the electronics of your computer and everything on it.  Surge protectors, while excellent for handling the little surges of power throughout any given day, are no match for a lightening strike.

If an electrical storm is headed your way, consider the following to protect your data.  First, properly shut down your computer.  Don’t just hit the power switch.  Next, unplug everything from the wall.  And don’t forget to back up your data, so that even if your computer gets hit, you’ll have a backup copy.
