Mobile Advocacy Toolkit: FrontlineSMS PDF Print E-mail

The aim of the mobile advocacy toolkit is to provide a set of tools and a knowledge base for those wishing to explore and develop the use of mobile phones in campaigning and advocacy work. One of those tools is FrontlineSMS.

The design and development of the FrontlineSMS system is based on kiwanja’s central focus of low cost, high impact interventions. Despite a huge increase in interest in SMS technology within the non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector, many find the technology out of reach due to a combination of lack of expertise, a lack of direction, and cost.

FrontlineSMS is a software application for desktop and laptop computers that does not require Internet connection for one to send SMS messages in bulk. It works with any Global System for Mobile (GSM) Communication networks, using the Short Messaging Service (SMS) of telecommunications providers.

It provides an affordable, standalone turn-key solution to NGOs, allowing them to access 'group' SMS technology. And it provides the ability to carry out small-to-medium-scale trials before embarking on possible larger project proposals.

How it works:

  • * You require a computer running Windows 2000, XP or Vista and a mobile phone or GPRS PC card that is compatible with the software and a sim card.

  • * Install the software, create and manage all of your SMS-related contact groups on the computer.

  • * Send and receive messages via special on-screen consoles.

  • * The software handles flash messages and long messages up to 320 characters in length instead of the standard 160 characters.

  • * It provides incoming and outgoing message history for each contact.

  • * You can engage with your contact groups - run surveys, competitions etc. via the Survey Manager.

  • * You can also run your own text-based information service via the automated Reply Manager.

  • * Export data to Excel.

  • * Finally, it is good for rural areas because you don’t need internet access. It works on any GSM network via your own PC or laptop.

Cost: The software is free to download (http://frontlinesms.kiwanja.net) but only free to use by charities and non-profit organisations. Before messages can be sent and received, an activation code is required. However,  while the software is free, the user will have to bear the cost of the SMS sent as determined by the telecommunications provider (MTN, UTL, Zain, Warid etc).
