CITIZEN JOURNALISM WORKSHOP |
The Citizen Journalism workshop has started. The 18 or so people attending are expecting to develop writing, journalism, internet, and blogging skills. Most represent local non-governmental organizations dealing with issues like domestic violence, ICT and women, gender development and equality and more.
Lillian from BROSDI has elaborated on what citizen journalism is and how it can be used for advocacy and awareness building. Joseph, a soon-to-be graduate from Makerere University, talked about journalism/blogging ethics. A fiery discussion ensued on whether journalists in Uganda should be facilitated (transport, food) for their work. The group also discussed whether journalism ethics apply to Citizen Journalists.
Lillian continued with a short introduction to Web 2.0 and its various features. The group then moved into Isis-WICCE’s computer lab for some hands-on training. Everyone was told to start a blog and become familiar with its various features. Half the group has signed onto WordPress accounts (faster loading in Uganda) and the other half on Blogger. The benefit of signing up to blogger means you get a gmail account with access to websites like Google Picasa, Google Reader, GMail and more.
Participants are encouraged to comment on the workshop. Sorry about the inconveniences caused by the internet. We would recommend that you skip out on that as you comment.
Thank you all for participating and look forward to giving you more through this workshop.
