The regional East Africa ICT for Development Network was born out of a 5 days workshop organised by KICTAnet, entitled Growing Regional ICT Opportunities Collectively, held at Lenana Conference Centre, Nairobi from May 19th –23,2008. The 5 proposed initial members of the EAICT4D network were invited to attend and these were I-Network Uganda, WOUGNET Uganda, SWOPNET Tanzania, KICTAnet Kenya, and Rwanda Development Gateway, CIPESA.

The main purpose of the network is to disseminate research and undertake advocacy on ICT for Development and access to infrastructure at the sub regional level, in order to create a sound platform for sub regional connectivity that will provide a platform for the effective use of ICTs in the development processes.

The Regional East African ICT for Development (EAICT4D) was launched on 23rd May 2008, at The Jacaranda Hotel, by the Chairperson of Kenya ICT Board Mr Paul Kukubo.

During the 5 days workshops participants were able to agree on the mission, vision, objectives and structure of the network. The EAICT4D Netwok members were also able to elect the first Chairman, Secretary and Coordinator of the Network.  The post of the Chairman Governing Council was elected to be Mr Abubakar Karsan from SWOPNET Tanzania; the Secretary was elected to be Ms Goretti Z. Amuriat representing WOUGNET and the initial Regional Coordinator of the EAICT4D was elected from KICTAnet, Mr Harry Hare. Other members of the networks present form the steering committee.
