Citizen Journalism in Africa ToT kicks off PDF Print E-mail

The Citizen Journalism in Africa project seeks to develop the capacity of CSOs in the use and practice of citizen journalism. Six countries are targeted including Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

For this week, 7 - 11 April 2008, twelve CSO representatives from Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia are at the Protea Courtyard in Dar es Salaam participating in a ToT training. Right now we are learning about what makes the news. Yesterday we focused on the differences and similarities between professional journalists and citizen journalists. We also looked at the media environment in our respective countries and the opportunities and risks for citizen journalism.

On the technical side we looked at a variety of Web2.0. Truth be told, this blog is part of my homework for the class ;). We also looked at RSS and del.icio.us -- still need to set up my del.icio.us account.

WOUGNET is represented by myself and Berna (WOUGNET Advocacy Officer) at this ToT. You can follow the rest of my blog at: http://wougnet-cja.blogspot.com/

1. Citizen Journalism
Hello Dorothy,

I stumbled into this discussion in one of my lectures at the Danish School of Journalism a few days ago: citizen journalism vs. trained journalists.

I commend you for getting involved in citizen journalism. While many did not agree that the average citizen could accurately report, I can't think of a better way to open discussions with the potential of reaching and involving a greater amount of people in their own country's affairs while ensuring that all sides of the story are covered.

Looking forward to working with you on this project!

Regards,

Siena
