Documenting ICT usage by women PDF Print E-mail

WOUGNET aims to explore and document the ways in which women and women organisations are using and applying ICTs for sustainable development. WOUGNET has adopted the Gender Evaluation Methodology (GEM - http://www.apcwomen.org/gem) that provides a systematic guide to integrating gender analysis and perspectives in ICT for development projects. GEM is developed by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC - http://www.apc.org).

In order to ensure that women’s needs have been targeted, gender-disaggregated data must be collected and ICT-related indicators must be identified which can truly chart the participation of women and the impact of ICTs in improving their livelihoods and leading to sustainable development. The statistics on ICT usage and application by gender are useful in informing the national policy processes and advocating for equitable access for all. Indicators of interest include[1]: health status, social status, economic status, access to resources, women’s agency/empowerment, opportunity and capability, enabling policy environment, women in decision-making in policy and business, women in the knowledge economy, women in science and technology and innovative systems, and women and lifelong learning.
