The volatile and rising global commodity prices have not only affected the rural farming communities but also set uncertainty among the farming communities. The World Bank earlier this week said that its index of food prices showed that the cost of basic food was up 36% this year in March, and since June last year, 44 million people had fallen below the poverty line around the world as a result of higher food prices. If prices rose further, tens of millions more could be also be pushed into poverty, it warned.

The 3rd European Forum on Rural Development took place in Palencia (Spain) from the 29th March to 1 April 2011. This Forum was a follow up to the previous forums held in Montpellier in 2002 and Berlin in 2007, respectively. Organized by various European stakeholders, the 3rd Forum was convened by the European Commission, the Government of Spain and the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development. Convened under the theme “Future agriculture and rural development to fight against hunger”. The forum consisted of Plenary sessions, breakout and Special sessions, Practitioners from Africa, Asia and Latin America gave in-depth talks, real-life examples and scientific research. A special session on ICTs and rural development was also organized by Technical centre for Agriculture and Rural development - CTA

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) is promoting various fellowship programmes for PhD, Postdoctoral and Advanced Research. These schemes represent a great opportunity for scientists and researchers who may be interested in enhancing their scientific knowledge. TWAS is now accepting applications for its postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholars and advanced research fellowship programmes. The fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centres of excellence in various countries in the South, including Brazil, China, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan and Thailand. Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

A statement on the recent elections by the women of Uganda
We, the women of Uganda, congratulate fellow citizens for having actively participated in the 2nd multiparty elections since Uganda returned to multiparty system of democracy in 2005. We further congratulate those elected to the different leadership positions, particularly the women who had to overcome significant cultural and systemic barriers to get into these positions. As we start a new period of nation building, we take time to reflect on some of the successes and shortcomings of the election so that we can build on the successes and identify mechanisms to mitigate the shortcomings for a better future. The theme for the Iinternational Women’s Day 2011 is “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women”. As WOUGNET joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day 2011, we continue to affirm our Mission - to promote and support the use of ICTs by women and women organisations in Uganda, so that they can take advantage of the opportunities presented by ICTs in order to effectively address national and local problems of sustainable development.
