Talking with Texts: How Cellphones Empower Deaf Children In Uganda PDF Print E-mail
News / Events

Kids text all the time – at school, on the bus, even when you’re trying to talk to them. It can be annoying. But imagine if a child couldn’t communicate at all – that’s when a mobile can become a lifeline. In some developing countries, children who are deaf don’t have access to special education, technology or even sign language teaching.

In this edition of “Mobile Message”, Cambridge to Africa’s Sacha DeVelle, explains how her organisation has been using mobile phones in specially designed education programmes to help deaf children in Uganda communicate. By getting everyone in their schools to help out, the projects also happen to be making them the coolest kids in school.

Mobile Message is a series of blog posts from FrontlineSMS about how mobile phones are being used throughout the world to improve, enrich, and empower billions of lives. This article was curated by Olivia O’Sullivan, our Media and Research Assistant.

“Digital Divide May Shift, but still Exists in 2030” PDF Print E-mail
News / Events

There will still be a digital divide in 2030 and that’s why ICT for development and IICD will continue to be relevant, says IICD’s Managing Director Caroline Figuères in her new year’s speech. But she also foresees changes:“IICD might be an African organisation supporting ICT for development in Europe in 2030.”

During her new year’s speech, IICD's managing director Caroline Figuères reflected on 2011, but mainly looked at the future. Figuères:”In 2011, IICD set the stage to build for the future. There will still be a need for our work. 15 years from now, there will still be a digital gap to be filled.  Maybe not the one we know now but there will still be digital inequality. And in 30 years time it could be that IICD HQ in Nairobi will send Kenya and Ghanaian ICT experts to Europe to help.”
