The internet point of presence in Apac district will begin operational by financial year 2010, Says Mr Bob Lyazi, the Director Rural Communication Development Fund (RCDF) of the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC).This was revealed during the third Lango Forum on e-Agriculture that took place on the 18th of February 2010 at the Apac District e-Society Community Hall. The Lango Forum on e-Agriculture is a bi-annual activity of Women Of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) carried out in Apac to sensitize rural women, policy makers and the community at large on the role of ICTs in Agricultural and rural development and highlights both the challenges and benefits involved in their application.Mr Lyazi said all districts in Uganda except Apac have the internet point of presence which is functional within 5km radius of the Town. The Director stressed that Apac POP had broken down as it was strucked by lightning and since then the cost of procuring this technology has been difficult. He said Uganda Communication Commission is working hard to ensure that these gadgets are procured, set and functional by the end of the year. Meanwhile in his presentation under the National ICT plans for rural connectivity, the Director noted that the Government of Uganda designed web portals for over 36 districts in Uganda, he however said that some districts including Apac have failed to administer their web portals including web hosting fees. He applauded Lira and Rukungiri districts for managing their portals well including even redesigning them. The Director also answered questions from the rural women, policy makers at the district and CSOs in relation to ICTs and promised to make the services better within their reach. He later held a meeting with the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer on the district portals and e-Society program. The Lango Forum is organised by WOUGNET and Kubere Information Center (KIC) with support from the Technical Center for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation CTA-(ACP-EU).
