“We should learn to say no to some of our situations as women…”

This was the focus of Day 2 on 9 July 2009  of the 3rd Women in Political Party Structures Training organized by Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) under the Theme: “Dancing to the Tunes of Democracy: Preparing for Effective Engagement in Politics”, held in Kampala, Uganda.  

 

It was all about getting in touch with reality on day two of the FOWODE training of Ugandan women in political party structures. Many times leaders tend to forget the situations of the people they represent and need the occasional wake-up call. Site visits to Nakiwogo landing site, Entebbe grade B hospital and Kitooro market laid a basis for problem analysis as an advocacy strategy. Sisters of the “Women’s Republic” returned emotional, passionate and angry about what they had seen. One of the key observations made was the dominant presence of women at work in dismal conditions in all three places.

“If the democracy dancing space were open and correct tune were played, I would dance but, my hands and legs are tied as I can’t in a way that enables me to ensure that my voice is heard, my issues are addressed and I am heard as a woman…So, when next the democracy drums sound, I need to determine the tune, the rhythm, the song, the dancers, the singers and who I dance with….. The first Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Programme (CAADP) day meeting was held in Tripoli, Libya on 27th June 2009, organised by the African Union Commission and the AU-NEPAD, hosted by the great socialist people’s Libya Arab Jamahiriya. The meeting brought together ministers of agriculture from 8 African countries (including Egypt, Algeria, Uganda, Libya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Mozambique), development partners (European Commission, the World Bank, African Development Bank, and JIRCAS), representatives of civil society organisations including farmers’ organisations, women groups and the private sector.
