WebDesignWebsites can be a beneficial tool for making contacts, forging partnerships, fundraising, and marketing services and crafts. The WebDesign program is a partnership of WOUGNET and InterConnection to donate websites to WOUGNET members that meet InterConnection's criteria for website donation. InterConnection's mission is to provide the Internet and computer technology and training to underserved communities in developing countries. A sample of websites that have been donated by InterConnection is available at http://www.interconnection.org/ngo. A common question for many NGOs is "What resources are available for non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations in developing countries that want to set up their own web site?". To address this question, Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) has produced Web Resources for NGOs and Nonprofits that presents some of the resources available (including InterConnection), discusses how you might approach setting up your own website, issues to consider, and gives a few practical tips. The Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), a non-profit organization, has been involved for the past decade with the deployment and integration of appropriate networking technology in various projects throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Oceania.
The following resources should also be helpful as you consider developing a website for your organisation:
In the WebDesign program, websites are developed by InterConnection volunteers and the responsibility for WOUGNET members is to provide appropriate text and photos for the websites. Websites that have been completed under the WebDesign program are:
WebDesign CriteriaThe basic criteria for participation in this program are:
WebDesign ProcessOrganisations that meet the basic criteria should apply for the WebDesign program using the WebDesign Application Form. This form is used to determine eligibility for the program. Eligible organisations are then invited to complete the Website Donation Form, which is used to gather the information to be used in the website. The forms are also available via email by requesting them from techsupport@wougnet.org. Approval for a donated website is made after a review of the materials submitted. This review is done by both WOUGNET and InterConnection. On approval of an organisation, InterConnection will post a request for the website design on their bulletin board at http://www.interconnection.org/volunteer/bulletin.htm. Once a volunteer selects the task, he/she will contact the organisation directly. Websites typically require a month for completion, depending on availability of volunteers. Donated websites will be hosted as extensions of the interconnection.org domain, for example, www.interconnection.org/wougnet. Hosting on the InterConnection domain allows volunteers to access the files and maintain members' websites. Also, interconnection.org is a very popular site and the websites that are directly linked to this site receive the benefits from their high traffic. In addition, InterConnection provides discounted domain name hosting to selected organisations, for example, www.wougnet.org instead of www.interconnection.org/wougnet. Contact info@interconnection.org for additional information on domain hosting. Organisations that receive websites will acknowledge InterConnection's support by adding the InterConnection logo at the bottom of the website homepage. WebDesign Local VolunteersWhen approved for a website, an organisation is assigned a WebDesign local volunteer. The WebDesign local volunteer assists the organisation with completion of the Website Donation Form as well as with reviewing and providing feedback to the organisation's web designer during development of the website. Our WebDesign local volunteers are:
