Report on Horn of Africa Conference on Women and ICTs, Kenya, June 3-7, 2002
The Horn of Africa Regional Conference on Women and ICTs was organised by the African Centre for Women, Information and Communications Technology (ACWICT), and held at the Kenya College Communications Technology (KCCT).
The conference aimed at raising awareness on ICT among women in the Horn of Africa region and exploring opportunities for harnessing the technology to work as a tool for their development.
The objectives of the conference were:
To discuss/share knowledge on the emerging information and communications technology, its services and their impact on development.
To exchange/learn lessons from women ICT practitioners within the region and beyond as well as take stock on progress being made at the regional/international level to ensure that women benefit from the opportunities provided by ICT.
To develop an action plan to ensure women's greater access to and effective utilisation of ICTs in the Horn of Africa region.
The conference was crowned by the launching of the Horn of Africa Women's Network (HAWKNet).
Two WOUGNET members received sponsorships to participate at the regional conference: Association of Uganda Women Medical Doctors (AUWMD) and Lungujja Women's Association (LWA).
