Uganda is host to more than 250,000 refugees from Southern Sudan. The majority live in East Moyo, and there is also a substantial self-settled population in Arua, Moyo and Kitgum Districts. The refugees started arriving in the late eighties and continue to come. Following changes in education policy in Sudan which have effectively cut most
Southerners off from further education there has been an increase in the number of school-age refugees.
Soon after their arrival in Uganda the parents set up primary schools. The Uganda Ministry of Local Government (MOLG) also provided school for the earliest arrivals. There are now several voluntary schools with well over 10,000 children. The schools follow the Uganda syllabus and around 5,000 students are in secondary school. It is clear that the greatest need is to maintain a continuous education system from primary to post-secondary so that any potentially bright Sudanese child can complete his/her education without a break. |
