Kabaawo Women’s Savings And Credit Development Association is a grassroots women Community Based Organization, initiated in 1996, by a group of women residing at Kabaawo Village in Mutundwe Parish, Kampala District in Uganda.
KWOSCDA’s Mission, is to empower women through training, and education in order to enable them effectively play their role in the National Development, hence lifting their general standards and that of their families.
The organization is a grantee of NVIWODA Development Fund. KWOSCDA in July 2003 expanded and improved its farming project, through acquisition of a Friesian cow. The project is intended to benefit the families of members and the Kabaawo community in general, through skills development in Diary farming and provision of improved nutrition.
February 2007: KWOSCDA Computer Training Program
The members of KWOSDA after pooling together resources recently purchased a piece of land in Kabaawo Zone, Mutundwe, a Kampala suburb. They are planning to put up an office when more funds are available. In this office KWOSCDA is planning to begin adult computer lessons because most of the members are computer illiterate.
Currently the group engages in voluntary HIV counseling and care in addition to credit facilities. The members have learnt how to save and their businesses are growing. Among these are farming, animal/poultry keeping, electronic products dealers, juice/wine processing, beekeeping, baking, tailoring, and medical services among many others.
NGABO’S DEATH
The cow was commonly known by the members as Ngabo literally meaning, a shield which was to protect women from poverty and ill health.
Since August, 2003, Ngabo provided to the families and children within the community with high quality milk.
Ngabo, was only four months pregnant, when the members of KWOSCDA were drastically hit with sad news on the 23rd August 2004, when NGABO the only Friesian cow, they had acquired, broke out of the farm and fed on poisonous Polythene bags, resulting into her untimely death.
This was a great loss and a set back to the organization and the members, who had anxiously been waiting to benefit from the Project, through milk production and send a calf to each member, as the project grows.
We are appealing and seeking for friends around and abroad, to come to our assistance, to enable us replace Ngabo, and continue with the project.
The Association has through self-help contributions and through savings of sale of milk from the project, mobilized some small fund worth Ug. Shs. 300,000/= (equivalent to US.$ 176.40). This fund is insufficient due to the high cost of a Friesian cow.
The project in the long run, would continue to directly benefit and improve the health of the children of members and the community at large.
