The Coalition on Violence Against Women was formed in 1999 by a group of women's organisation's representatives and individuals interested in women's Human Rights issues. Since its inception the coalition has got a membership of over 33 women's organisations whose focus are to incorporate programmes and activities that aim at ending violence against women in Uganda. Workshops have been held and strategies mapped out for the cause since 1999. In 1999, UNFPA through the population secretariat and the Ministry of Gender Labor and Social Development funded 5 member organisations to research on gender violence in Apac and Mbale districts. The results of the findings were disseminated on 21st November, 2000. The findings call for a more concerted effort to end gender violence more than before. The coalition is looking for funding in order to launch a campaign against gender violence countrywide through the women's NGOs and individuals of goodwill. A proposal outlining the main activities has already been written and is being sent to potential funding agencies.
