University of California-Berkeley African Studies Center: Call for Women Artists

The University of California-Berkeley African Studies Center is engaged in an academic exhibition of fine art opening this fall (August-December 2002) involving East African artists. The focus of the exhibition centers on the Uganda Women's Movement, and will feature original works by artists of both sexes, accompanied by information related to this topic. We would like to include more women artists, especially if they are Ugandan and wish to create new pieces focussed specifically upon this important topic.

Type of artwork sought

We prefer original 2-D works (paintings) on canvas, such as oils, acrylics, etc., no larger than 24x36 inches. The subject of the work should center upon Women's empowerment, including aspects of political, social, economic, or professional development, at either a personal or societal level. Each artist must also provide a short paragraph describing the work and its significance to this topic and to the Uganda women's movement, as it applies.

Work-in-progress webpage

We have set up a work-in-progress webpage for this project at Emerging Women: A Tribute to Uganda. You may visit this webpage to achieve a sense for the current direction of this project.

Other key points

Since we communicate often and primarily via e-mail, we must ask that artists who wish to participate have regular access to e-mail (checking at least once per week). Also, since there is about two months left for us to receive works for this exhibition, we would need to have interested artists begin work immediately in order to have works to us by end of May 2002. (We can help with shipping costs.)

Career development benefit

To benefit each artist's participation with this project, we offer to build a free career webpage including biographical information, along with images, artwork descriptions, resume, etc. There is no cost to the artist to build or maintain their webpage and they are encouraged to update it with new works periodically, again at no charge. We will link this page to our online exhibition page, and also to our ARTISTS page so that participating artists can gain wider exposure for their work and enhanced career development. Artists are encouraged to forward biographies, resumes, and images via e-mail to take advantage of this free service.

Locating female artists

Perhaps you can help us locate female artists who would like to participate in the exhibition. We encourage interested artists to contact us (gadart@aol.com).
