Gender, Virtual Seminars, and Networking: successful strategies, lessons, and challenges, November 5, 2002
The World Bank Gender and the Digital Divide Seminar Series in collaboration with Gender in Rural Development Thematic Group (GENRD) hosted a seminar on successful strategies, lessons and challenges of conducting virtual seminars. Three presenters, including WOUGNET, were invited to discuss how to conduct virtual seminars on gender and building networks among local and global communities in both developed and developing countries.
The WOUGNET presentation described the formation of WOUGNET, outlined WOUGNET activities and challenges, and highlighted the way forward for WOUGNET with emphasis on information access for rural communities. The presentation also included lessons learned on "how to conduct a virtual conference" based on the experience of hosting the June 2002 WOUGNET online conference: Information Access for Rural Women (IARW). WOUGNET Meeting: Information sharing on the application of ICTs, January 15, 2003
Held in Kampala, Uganda, the meeting on "Information sharing on the application of ICTs" was organised by WOUGNET and co-sponsored by I-Network. The major purpose of the meeting was to share information on the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Members made presentations on the benefits and challenges they face as being WOUGNET members. The presentations were kicked of by a panel consisting of three organizations including Council for Economic Empowerment for Women of Africa (CEEWA-U), Isis Women's International Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE) and Lungujja Women Association (LWA). The panel presentations were followed by an open discussion among meeting participants. The meaningful and fruitful discussion of the participants contributed to the success of the meeting.


UNESCO Expert Group Meeting on Gender Issues in the Information Society, July 14, 2003
Held at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France, the Expert Group Meeting brought together gender issues specialists, academics, activists and policy and decision makers from around the world to share information and make concrete recommendations and suggestions as to how to improve women's participation in the Information Society through various capacity building, policy reform and alternative intervention actions at national, regional and international level.
WOUGNET's presentation described WOUGNET's mission and activities, challenges with ICTs in Uganda, an overview of the ICT policy in Uganda and gender concerns regarding the policy. For a copy of the WOUGNET presentation, click here (PowerPoint format).


Forum on ICTs and Gender: Optimizing Opportunities, August 20 - 23, 2003
Held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Forum was a multi-stakeholder initiative, bringing together public, private and not-for-profit stakeholders to examine issues surrounding gender and information and communication technologies. In general, the purpose was to foster a greater appreciation of the gender-related barriers that exist in developing and developed countries, to develop an understanding of why women need access to ICTs, and to discuss strategies for overcoming these barriers. This is expected to translate into policies that support women's access to ICTs and successful networking to enhance women's participation in the information economy, especially in the developing world.
WOUGNET's presentation described WOUGNET's mission and activities, as well as challenges and opportunities for women and ICTs in Uganda. WOUGNET's participation was sponsered by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). For a copy of the WOUGNET presentation, click here (PowerPoint format).


WOUGNET Annual Meeting: WOUGNET Action Plan 2004, January 21, 2004
WOUGNET held a meeting for her members to review the WOUGNET Action Plan 2004 and to get members’ input for the way forward. The meeting took place on January 21, 2004 at Hotel Africana, Kampala, and had fifty-three participants: thirty-nine women and fourteen men. During the meeting, a lot of time was spent on how WOUGNET can reach out to rural communities and her members without access to the internet considering that they seemed to be on the increase. Members came up with suggestions on how to go about this challenge giving their own experiences in their various organizations. Another issue that the participants embraced was the build up of core teams on key/priority issues like health, agriculture, business etc. They signed up to be on these teams. A volunteer Newsletter team was also formed. Yet another team was set up to look into the issue of WOUGNET membership. For a copy of the meeting report,

WOUGNET Workshop: "Women's Health: The Role of ICTs", August 19, 2004
The WOUGNET workshop “Women’s Health: The Role of ICTs” was held on August 19, 2004 at Hotel Africana, Kampala. With support from Hivos, WOUGNET organized this workshop to explore the opportunities that ICT can bring about in the enhancement of women’s health related issues in Uganda. The half-day workshop drew participation of 48 representatives from government, women organisations and other non-governmental organisations around the country. Participants noted follow-up issues should include:

  • Family planning within the communities
  • Economic empowerment of women through ICTs as it an impediment to women’s health
  • The role of youth in ICT
  • Tailoring ICTs to women’s health
  • Specific interventions to enhance women to harness ICTs for health

Baroness Janet Whitaker’s Dialogue with Ugandan Women Organisations, August 21, 2004
The meeting of Baroness Janet Whitaker with Ugandan women organisations was convened by the United Nations Fund for women Empowerment (UNIFEM) in conjunction with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the aim of sharing information with organizations working to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in Uganda. It was intended to provide Baroness Janet Whitaker with an insight into the plight of Ugandan women especially in her capacity as an active member of the UK UNIFEM committee ­ promoting gender equality and women empowerment. WOUGNET/AFC Workshop: "CYBER – FORUM: ICT Training for Women Entreprenuers - TOT Workshop", October 22-23, 2004
Due to the convergence of the goals and aims of the Associates for Change (AFC) ICT project with those of WOUGNET, AFC and WOUGNET collaborated to host a two-day workshop under the theme of “Women Entrepreneurs: The role of ICTs”. The core objective of the WOUGNET-AFC workshop was to develop the capacity of both rural and urban women entrepreneurs in Uganda to use ICTs in strengthening their enterprises and market shares in local, regional and international trade. It was organised in collaboration with Council for Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa (CEEWA-Uganda), Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL), and Networked Intelligence for Development (NID), and with support from Hivos and UNIFEM.

WOUGNET ICT and Gender presentation, Junior Node ICT Holiday Camp, January 17, 2005
An ICT Holiday Camp was organised by the I-Network Junior Node and held at St. Henry's College Kitovu, Masaka, Uganda, from 16 - 23 January 2005. The ICT camp was organised to raise awareness of the youths’ about how ICT relates to various aspects of life such as: Education, Agriculture, Gender and Commerce/Entreprenuership. WOUGNET was invited to make a presentation addressing the ICT and Gender.
WOUGNET's presentation sought to mobilize the youths to appreciate the linkage between ICT and Gender; the challenges that boys and girls face and the differences within the sexes in use of ICT. The presentation also described WOUGNET’s mission, activities and gender concerns in the ICT sector and also addressed questions including the following:
-   Are there any gender differences in access to ICT?
-   How does the use of ICT affect men-boys and women-girls differently?
-   Are both men-boys and women-girls included in ICT decision making?
