Why ICTs and Why for Women? Gloria Katusiime. May 15, 2003
Why ICTs and Why for women was the underlying concept behind a workshop for Women communicators from five countries in Africa that met for a week in Kampala to study the use of information and communication technologies for the reporting of HIV/AIDS.
UNESCO and SciDev.Net with an objective of
equipping women journalists produce timely and accurate reports; news stories and features about HIV/AIDS research organised the workshop.
The use of Information and communication technologies enables more information
to be found, retrieved and disseminated faster than ever before.
Yet women in particular often find themselves at a disadvantage, whether
through a perception that computers and other technology are for 'men only' or
through lack of skills, opportunity, power or finance, women are unable to take
advantage of the ICT revolution.
More so women are still out numbered and outmaneuvered by men in majority of
media companies around the world with the result that they often feel less
confident and less influential than their male colleagues.
And so with this in mind journalists were taken through 'drills' that would
develop new skills and knowledge about the use of ICTs and to apply these to
the task of reporting more effectively about HIV/AIDS.
