The theme of the meeting is "Children affected and infected with HIV/AIDS: the strategies to cope". This will be an interactive meeting for women to share experiences as they cope with the epidemic of AIDS in Africa. The deadline for submission of abstracts is December 15th, 2000. Second Africa Telehealth Conference: "The Role of Low-Cost Technology for Improved Access to Public Health Care Programs Throughout Africa" Postponed to March 2002, click here for details. The Africa Telehealth Conference Uganda Branch in cooperation with UNICEF Uganda is pleased to announce that the Second Africa Telehealth Conference entitled "The Role of Low-Cost Technology for Improved Access to Public Health Care Programs Throughout Africa" will be held in Kampala Uganda in April 10 - 14, 2001. The goal of the conference is to characterize how telecommunication resources, computer-based information systems and appropriate health information infrastructures can be utilized to advance the general health conditions of African society, through improvements to quality, access, and management of health systems on the continent. The conference will discuss current problems and trends in the utilization of computer-based telecommunications technologies in the health sector. The "Africa Telehealth Project", which has been involved in the organization and design of this project for over 24 months, will act on the findings from this conference to develop and design a Telemedicine Centre of Excellence in Kampala, Uganda. This initiative will build upon earlier efforts by infoDev (such as the Y2K initiative) to help developing countries evaluate their information infrastructures. Click here for more information. July 2001 Calling the Circle Uganda - Return Visit In January 2001, the Women's International Network - California Women's Agenda (WIN-CAWA) hosted "Calling the Circle: Uganda", bringing together seven women representing Ugandan NGOs - including members from ACFODE and FOWODE - and US representatives of WIN in San Francisco, California. The vision of "Calling the Circle: Uganda" is to build a "virtual grassroots network" via the internet between Uganda and US women for joint advocacy and grassroots democracy. Isis-WICCE’s 2001 Exchange Programme Institute Isis-WICCE’s Exchange Programme Institute offers women activists, working in the area of armed conflict and peace issues, an opportunity to spend time working on the themes, and to develop skills in using the human rights framework while working on these issues. The theme for Isis-WICCE's 2001 Institute is "Documenting Women's Experiences of Armed Conflict: A Tool for Advocacy, Social Justice and Women’s Empowerment to Ensure respect for Human Rights and Sustainable Peace". We are presently focusing on developing the skills of women to document the experiences of women in situations of armed conflict and the violation of their rights in such situation. We also aim to develop advocacy skills to enable women to fully participate in peace processes and the development of sustainable peace. Tel: 256 41 543 953 Fax: 256-41-543954 E-mail: isis@starcom.co.ug Lungujja Women's Association (L.W.A) hosts two Norwegian students In June 2001, Hege Elisabeth Sotberg and Ingrid Spjeldnæs posted a message on WOUGNET: "We are two Norwegian female students from the University of Trondheim (NTNU) who are about to start working on our final report in psychology. .... We are looking for a development project directed towards women in Kampala or nearby". This posting was followed by an invitation from the Lungujja Women's Association to participate in their projects, and in July 2001, the two students arrived in Kampala for a 10-week visit. Since their arrival, the students have participated in the L.W.A weekly meetings, been invited to visit L.W.A members' homes, conducted interviews for input in their dissertaion for a Master's program in Psychology, visited other women organisations including the Uganda Women's Network (UWONET), Isis-Women's International Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE) as well as the Department of Women Studies at Makerere University. They have also been able to tour the country - visiting places like Entebbe, Jinja and Murchion Falls National Park, as well as participate in cultural activities. The National Executive Committee is pleased to announce that NAWOU was granted SPECIAL Consultative Status by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations at its May 2001 session. We are soliciting applications from capable individuals and recommendations of people, who are interested in representing NAWOU in establishing constructive consultative relations with the United Nations. The designation of representatives will be done on a yearly basis with possible extension. "Women’s Experiences of Armed Conflict Situations in Uganda: The case of Gulu District 1986-1999" and "Medical Interventional Study of War Affected Gulu District, Uganda" are essentially two parts of the same report. Part One recounts one of the longest civil conflicts in the history of Uganda and examines its effects on individuals especially women and girls, families and communities. The outcome of the findings of the earlier documentation necessitated an intervention as a way of scientifically analysing the consequences of war especially to women and girls. Part Two details a plethora of war related physical, mental and psychological malformations in just one of the over 30 Internally Displaced Peoples’ Camps of Gulu (Awer camp), that were serious to warrant specialised attention. AUWMD's project titled Providing information electronically on reproductive health aims at disseminating information on reproductive health to women NGOs connected electronically so that they can use the information in their advocacy and other related activities. Winners will be announced in the Stockholm City Hall on September 26, 2001. Organizers of conferences taking place before November may apply, but there is no guarantee that funding can be made available before the conference. Applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted. The iCSF makes block grants to organizers of conferences that foster the utilization of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) for development.
