TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT
A CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR Isis-WICCE'S 2001 EXCHANGE PROGRAMME'S INSTITUTE.

Isis-WICCE is international women's resource centre based in Kampala, Uganda. It aims to eliminate injustices based on unequal power relations, and to improve women's social, economic, and political situations. This is done through production and exchange of information, promotion of ideas and solidarity actions, and networking.

Isis-WICCE's Exchange Programme Institute offers women activists, working in the area of armed conflict and peace issues, an opportunity to spend time working on the themes, and to develop skills in using the human rights framework while working on these issues.

The theme for Isis-WICCE's 2001 Institute is "Documenting Women's Experiences of Armed Conflict: A Tool for Advocacy, Social Justice and Women's Empowerment to Ensure respect for Human Rights and Sustainable Peace". We are presently focusing on developing the skills of women to document the experiences of women in situations of armed conflict and the violation of their rights in such situation. We also aim to develop advocacy skills to enable women to fully participate in peace processes and the development of sustainable peace.

We believe your organization would benefit from this training. The programme will be facilitated by well - known and respected women in the international women's movement.

The Exchange Programme Institute runs in three phases:
  • The Orientation/Action Plan period;
  • Action Plan Implementation; and
  • Report Back period.

Phase 1: The Orientation/Action Plan Period

The Orientation period will start on Monday, August 6th, 2001, and end on Friday, August 17th, 2001. It will take place in Kampala, Uganda. During this period, participants will have an opportunity to share reports of their country situations. They will then be trained in human rights instruments and their application. Considerable time will be spent on documentation using the human rights framework and collecting information from women survivors of armed conflict. We will have an opportunity to visit an area or group that has experienced armed conflict and have a day of sharing with them.

Each participant will have come with a tentative plan of action for utilising the knowledge and skills gained from the Institute. The resource persons will assist participants to refine their plans of action in order to make them realistically accomplishable in their home situation.

Phase 2: Plan Implementation Period

Each participant spends the Action Plan Implementation period in her home group.
For six months, she works on her proposed plan of action as well as do her usual work. Isis-WICCE keeps in touch and monitors the progress of the project. There is a small budget towards the activities of the plan of action, and Isis-WICCE hopes to collaborate with your organization to fundraise for any top-up funds the participant might need to accomplish the task.

Phase 3: Report Back Period

After approximately 6 months, the participants get together again in Kampala, for the synthesis/report back period. They share reports of their experiences and accomplishments during the six-month plan implementation period. The group then draws up further plans of action for future work, or refines the present plans for future use. This period lasts for two weeks, after which participants are expected to continue with documentation, and sharing experiences/problems with Isis-WICCE, thus strengthening our working relationship.

If within this period, one group feels the need to visit a sister group for purposes of learning from one another and collaborating closer in future, Isis-WICCE is willing to discuss the issue and its facilitation. Isis-WICCE believes that such exchanges are beneficial to both groups, but they must be initiated by the groups themselves after realising the benefits of networking.

All applications, along with relevant additional information should reach Isis-WICCE by July 15th 2001. Please print out and complete the application form and send it back to us as soon as possible, and not later than July 15th 2001. Send it to:
